Sales tax and multi state compliance
We work out where your business has created a tax obligation, register you where you need to be, and file sales, use, property, and franchise returns on time.
The difference
Thresholds are checked against your actual sales as they come in, so you find out you crossed a state line in time to register rather than during an audit.
Where you owe, and on what rhythm
Before you hand anything over
How we handle your data
-
Your systems stay yours.
The work happens in your own accounts, on your own subscriptions, under your ownership. Nothing leaves the systems you have given us access to.
-
Access is requested, never assumed.
Read only wherever the work allows it, asked for per system rather than granted in bulk, and named per person. Credentials are never shared, and your records never sit on personal devices.
-
Preparing stays separate from approving.
A second person reviews before anything is filed or closed. On payables we prepare the run and you're the one who releases it.
Who it’s for
Businesses selling into more than one state, or holding staff, property, or inventory somewhere they don't think of as home. Growth creates these obligations quietly, and no state sends a notice when you cross the line.
How we help
- 01 We review where your sales, staff, property, and inventory create an obligation, and tell you plainly where you stand today.
- 02 We monitor thresholds as your sales change, so a new obligation is caught when it happens.
- 03 We register you in the states that require it, and only in those.
- 04 We prepare and file sales and use tax returns on each jurisdiction's own calendar.
- 05 We handle property tax and state income and franchise filings alongside them.
- 06 We collect and track exemption certificates, so exempt sales survive being questioned.
- 07 We deal with state notices when they arrive, rather than letting them stack up unopened.
What you get
- A clear picture of where you actually owe.
- Registrations handled in the states that need them.
- Returns filed on time across every jurisdiction.
- Exemption certificates collected and current.
- Notices answered, not accumulated.
What owners ask about sales tax and multi state compliance
What is economic nexus, in plain terms?
It's the point where selling into a state creates a tax obligation there, even with no office or staff in it. Most states set that line at a revenue figure, commonly $100,000 of sales into that state in a year, and several have now dropped their separate transaction count tests. Cross it and you're expected to register and file.
We think we are already behind. What happens then?
That's common, and it goes better when you raise it than when a state finds it. Most states run voluntary disclosure programs that limit how far back they look and reduce penalties. We work out the exposure first, then the route to fixing it.
Do you file our federal income tax return?
No. Sales, use, property, and state franchise filings we handle. The federal return is filed by your CPA, and our job is to hand them books clean enough to file from.
Why do exemption certificates matter so much?
An exempt sale without a valid certificate on file stops being exempt during an audit, and the tax gets assessed against you rather than your customer. Certificates also expire. Collecting them is easy, keeping them current is the part that gets missed.
Does this cover other countries?
Our filing work is United States focused. If you sell internationally we'll tell you where the boundary of our service is rather than guess at obligations we don't handle.
